Ingredients & Contents of the product: Now let’s have a look at the ingredients and the contents present in this exfoliating serum.

AHAs: AHAs, or Alpha Hydroxy Acids are natural, gentle exfoliators for your skin that are derived from fruits. It also helps in boosting collagen, reducing wrinkles, reducing acne & treating hyperpigmentation. There are various types of AHAs like Gylcolic Acid; which is naturally derived from sugarcane, Lactic Acid; which is made from the lactose found in milk. Then there is Tartaric Acid; which is derived from number of plants and fruits like grapes. Then there is Citric Acid; derived from citrus fruit extracts like lemons & limes.

Grapefruit: Other than reducing inflammation & skin redness, grapefruits are rich anti-oxidants. This helps transform dull, dehydrated complexions to a youthful, glowing one & leaves your skin looking beautifully radiant.

Effects & Experience: So I had been researching a lot about chemical exfoliants and since I have a very sensitive, acne prone, and a combination skin type, I was a little sceptical about which exfoliant would be alright for my sensitive skin as my skin reacts very easily to ingredients that do not suit me or work for me. Due to sensitive skin, my skin gets red and irritated with anything which has a high concentration of contents that do not suit me. Also, there are a lot of brands and chemical exfoliants that are said to be the best, but sadly most of them are not available in India. So after reading up a lot, I thought of giving this a shot, as I found it to be working for the kind of skin type I have and it seemed pretty beginner-friendly, so I got it for myself. Now let’s read about my experience with this one.

To start with, the packaging is convenient and looks nice too. The purple-y liquid with a hint of pink inside the bottle surely does look like some unicorn potion. Lol, don't you guys feel the same? Not that I have seen what that looks like or believe, but the color does look very unicorn-y.

Anyways, coming back to what this product does, and whether it does what it claims to do.

So I read up the instructions carefully before using it, and used it just the way it is mentioned on the product. I cleansed my face, applied the serum on my face and left it on for 10 minutes, and washed it off with cold water, following up with a mild moisturizer and a sunscreen.

Firstly, this exfoliant has a very pleasant fragrance I would say. And it straight up smells like pineapple, and grapes. But it is not a mild fragrance, it is definitely strong. And I don’t see why Dot & Key has such strong fragrances in all of their products. I have used their Serums, their Moisturizers, Night Creams, almost every product has such a strong fragrance. Yes the fragrance is pleasant in their products, they smell delicious, they do not smell false or bad at all, but I don’t see a point of adding so much fragrance in skin care. As I have sensitive skin, my skin reacts to strong fragrant products too. I hope Dot & Key tones down the percentage of fragrance that is there in their products.

As I applied it on my face it spread very easily. It did tingle for a couple of seconds, but I read it up before applying and a slight tingling sensation is normal, so that was alright. The texture of this serum is very gel-like and it spreads super easily.

Now once I washed off this exfoliant after 10 minutes, yes I did see a difference in my skin instantly. My skin felt and looked much smoother, it looked more radiant, fresh and glowing.

I usually apply it once a week or two, and it does a decent job of exfoliating the skin, making it smoother and buffing the dead skin away. It is a decent chemical exfoliant to start with, if you are new to chemical exfoliants and want to try it out. The concentration of the AHA and BHA in this serum is alright, if your skin is new to chemical exfoliants.

Important Notes –

  • Avoid applying it on your under eye area.
  • Use a sunscreen with a SPF 30 or more, after chemical exfoliating, especially if you are exfoliating during the day time.
  • Avoid or limit sun exposure the day you have exfoliated.
  • Avoid wearing any makeup for a day (if you can), on the day you have exfoliated.
  • Avoid using any skin care with strong ingredients or any serums which has other acids, as mixing up multiple acids or ingredients on your skin do not go well.
  • Do not keep it on your face for more than 10 minutes.

Pros:

  • It’s gentle and mildly exfoliates the skin, compared to other peeling solutions with high percentage, so this one is very beginner friendly.
  • It does not irritate sensitive skin.
  • It does not dry out your skin.

Cons:

  • If you are allergic to strong fragrances, scents, even the pleasant ones, this might be too strong for you in terms of scent.

Conclusion: This is a decent exfoliating serum, if you and your skin are new to chemical exfoliants, this one is very beginner friendly and is alright to start with. It does make your skin smoother, radiant, and gives you a glow as it buffs away all the dead skin. It mostly has natural fruit acids, and the concentration of AHA and BHA is not too high, even if you have sensitive skin.

So, in my opinion, Dot & Key’s Hydro Peel Glow Potion 10% AHA + 2% BHA Exfoliating Serum is a good buy, to start and try chemical exfoliation.
